Who wrote Hiawatha? He had a verse collection that fits … but it is wrong! When I finally got 1a, I kicked myself that it was so obvious.

Could the first part of 25A be viewed as 3/100th of a larger denomination? Interestingly 3/100th spelled out as three hundredth can also be read as 300th.

A bit of a stretch. Just trying too hard to make Jono's prediction from last week true.

1a

Took me a long time but I eventually realised that there was a word that fitted for the second part. The first and last letters were correct. It was logically perfect and a Google check showed a connection to Hiawatha.

Took me even longer to realise it was wrong.

Akg,

Following on from your post, and these are also a stretch, I noticed that part of 1a, 25a, 4d, and part of 7d have some kind of relation to the number 3, albeit sometimes tenuously.

Is it enough to suggest a connection to a 3rd centenary (centennial?) puzzle - definitely not... but it was fun to play along 😊

I think all this talk of Hiawatha is just going to confuse people.

Not least because, as we all know - Hiawatha didn't bother too much...

Anyone?

Everyman was in a playful mood this week I felt, with some gleeful misdirection and homphony.

Still misdirected on 16 and the possibly related 22 though, if anyone feels like explaining the parsing.

Hi Plutocrat,

16a - 6 letter "abstract" as in a summary + 3 letter "see" as in a bishopric - definition is "yes"

22d - double definition, "lead" as in a heavy weight" and it's also a synonym of the answer to 16a

LOI 5. No idea what a Yorkshireman has to do with the only possible answer.

Enlightenment welcome!

You obviously don't use the Uxbridge English Dictionary.
