Thanks Micky, that's exactly how I felt when I finally unpacked it - I think it was the "one's briefly put" that initially threw me.

So for once I’ve completed this but I cannot parse 5d nor 22a. Help please?

Hi Debsie,

5d - single letter "lamb's rump" + letter "hog's back" - definition is "join" as a verb but it's also thematic so that should help.

22a - "a" + 7 letter "free-for-all" minus "right" gives you "a sale"

Sorry Debsie, I see you've already solved them and were just asking about parsing, so ignore the definition parts of my replies:-)

Thanks Brendan. I had got the answers just couldn’t see how to parse them. Penny dropped with 22a thank you. I hadn’t heard of that word for “hog’s back” before.

I first came across that 'Hog's Back' in the Bulldog Drummond novel, at school in the early 1970s. I thought it was such a marvellous name.
