Thanks to Brummie for an interesting but gentle Prize challenge this week.
FOI 12 (the customary NW corner starting point drew blanks on first pass).
LOI 28 (rather an easy clue, but that was the last unfilled solution).

Quite a few low-hanging fruit clues helped get started. One unusual word, one tricky double definition, and a geographical solution were the toughest for me.

Not many blockbuster clues IMO, will go with 20 and 14 as co-COD over 7, 4 and 19.

Can't see a theme or Nina (yet?).

Pretty mamageable effort from Brummie, but that's not to say it wasn't fun.

If you do get stuck, there is at least one long anagram and at least one hidden, both in the downs.

I'd never heard of Chesil Beach but, thankfully, I had both the crossers and the wordplay was pretty clear and then Google confirmed.

A couple of new words, namely at 10a and 14d but, again, the wordplay was clear so no complaints.

COD - Quite liked the Paulinesque clue at 1d but I'll plump for 15a.

Thanks to Brummie for an entertaining Prize.

Please feel free to leave a comment letting us know how you got on and, if you do run into difficulties, don't hesitate to post your query on here - there's alwayus people willing to help.

New poster's are particularly welcome.

Stay safe:-)

Sorry, that should have read "...Paulinesque clue at 16d"

Brendan, I thought 16(d) was the Pauline entry. But overall not much naughtiness considering Brummie's also composes as Cyclops in Private Eye.

Hi Geeker, our posts crossed - I spilled some drinking chocolate on my laptop keyboard and now the number 5 and 6 keys don't work so I have to use a pop-up keyboard I keep hidden in my taskbar:-)

The dreaded crossing posts! I thought you might have posted by phone, which sometimes leads to confusing results.
Hope you can fix the keyboard...I have a habit of eating/drinking while on the computer, have had many spills but never one that bad.

Sorry Geeker, I forgot to ask if you are feeling any better, I know you were a bit under the weather last week.

Thanks, Brendan. I was really sick with cold/flu/sore throat symptoms from about the 8th through the 15th of Oct. I'm mostly better, but still some nagging head congestion and occasional cough.
Bad break, because it's been a beautiful early autumn here and I had to curtail a few activities.

Did the editor mix up this week's puzzles? Enigmatist on Wednesday was far more of a Prize than today's Brummie.

BTW

Why is it still called the Prize when no prize is offered?

Hi Swarbrules,

I think it is still a prize crossword but you have to buy the paper to enter. I've just checked under the Guardian Crossword heading and the names of the 5 winners from last week's 29,518 are listed - one is from Geeker's neck of the woods in Newark:-)
