Thanks rhsl. I couldn’t find the resultant 3 letter language, but have now.

can someone help with parsing for 31d pls. i can see the mechanics the clue (and answer) are suggesting, but dont see how the single letter arises from the clue.

Gentle hint required please - are there clashes of letters ? For example the only shared letter for 9 down and 24 across has already been used by 17 across ? And 24 across and 9 dn down are trivial so I know Ive got them right?? Likewise 8 and 26

No there are not - I think you have some errors.

9/24 is E, 17/9 is M
8D/26 is also E

Of course, I don't know what solutions you've got, crabapple, but 9d and 24a have 2 letters in common, as do 8d and 26a.

2d - 4 letter "fix" + "last of cacti! + 3 letter "closely observe" - definition is "Australian plant"

3a - "derision finally" goes inside/'stops' 3 letter "unskilful" - definition is "players"
