I am getting a bit fed up with this puzzle, having solved all the clues and seemingly still having some way to go. I have found three possibilities for 1 across, but only one of them could be the K******* because none of its letters repeats. The forename of its inventor is the only one placed diagonally in my grid (the others being horizontal and vertical respectively). However, I come unstuck when I try to 29 the un-numbered entry: the first three letters are okay, but the fourth does not work. I don't know whether anyone reading this can follow what I am trying to say, but if some kind soul could say whether I am on the right lines, or not, that would be a great help.

I now realise I would have got to the end of this much sooner had I not clicked on the first 29-r from the Google results, as it gave me gobbledegook!

After quite a lot of searching and stumbling, I think I'm at the very last phase--to "insert its entry number". I can't figure out exactly what that means or where to insert it! I believe I have "entered the next member of the set." I will agree with everyone else in my admiration of this construction, what a feat.

I needed a lot of help with this - largely because my initial Google search led me to two wrong names to go with one of my forenames - but am very glad I persevered.

Opt0 - it sounds to me like you're on the right lines. I'm not sure why your fourth letter would be a problem. For me, one transformation changed it to the only other possible letter; the second changed it back again.

Crowdedmorning- there's a reason why there is an 'appropriate location' for the next member of the set, which I take as a pointer for where the entry number should go.

0pt0, I feel your pain. I couldn't get the 7's to work either*. In the end I didn't bother and just worked it out given some of the limitations of the unnumbered entry and the 3rd in the series and what that is associated with other than 7's.

* to be honest whenever the terms '7'' and '29' and particularly 'P...f...' appear I lose interest. I'm not a candidate for GCHQ, I just like crossword puzzles/words.

crowdedmorning - the entry that you will have decoded is unnumbered. you need to give it an "appropriate" number - if you have the entry for 1a, you will know whwt set is involved, and that it involves numbers.

hope this helps

dodgepot - i would also be interested to know if the setter/editors consciously decided to leave the last bit of the preamble in - to make it easier for people to complete (to point of submission).

It would have been much harder (for me at least) if it hadnt been there, and you leave 1a blank and the 29'd unnumbered entry unnumbered - although it would lose one element of the mastery of the construction.

Thank you so much - how did I miss that? I finally limped over the line on Monday more by a lucky guess than anything else. Brilliant puzzle that very nearly defeated me

Well you all seem to have cracked this one in the end, whilst I am still staring at a half filled grid.

Some guidance on 13a or 22d would be much appreciated.

I fear that this one may best me but I'll g8ve it another few days.

13 Across DEFINITION is the first word and the wordplay is an anagram which leads to a proper name after which a place of execution in the city where this person lived is named.

22 Definition is the last word. French might help you with the nest. A 4 letter word for a hound/ hunter (locatable in Bradford's) is included
