Am I correct in assuming 1a remains blank for submission, and the previously unnumbered is to be entered in its decoded version?

i Know I am probably being incredibly thick but I'm reading unnumbered entry not unclued. I cannot see an unnumbered entry. I have got a full grid both stages of the message and what I believe is one method of decoding from someone who is more famous for his bridge. I cannot see where to go from here, Even the tiniest hint would be appreciated

nanu, it sounds like you are further ahead but I did spot the unnumbered entry. It's a 4 letter across entry on the same row as 38a.

I have the punctuated message, but am not sure exactly how to apply it. Can anyone tell me how many techniques need to be used? And are they to be used in sequence twice?

Stringendo, in 28d. 'A' becomes 3 letters, and you will probably see the rest. The word 'system' isn't mentioned in the Chambers entry for the answer, but comes up if you Google it.
