Playbus,
Yes, you have the correct crossers. A word for widespread inside a four letter anagram…

Thx Jono , had to look it up, never heard of that word, must be made up by Ladbrokes and Co. to entice a gamble frenzy.

Rocky @ 43 absolutely! Still struggling with some parsing , 18a
even with Brenden’s explanation. Not an enjoyable experience but certainly thought provoking , will not be adding Jack to my favourite compilers list.

16d is a fairly common word Stateside.
On review, I underrated 18a and should have listed it as a COD contender. Agree with Brendan's parsing.

Thanks Dhope,

It is a tricky one, not least because, once you've made the adjustment to "state", you're left with a word that, including the final letter, means "someone from a state" - that confused me no end!

Finished, earlier in the week than usual. Foi 17a, LOI 22a, which is perhaps COD as delightfully misdirecting but accurate.

Had to use Crossword Solver for a few but even when faced with the possibilities for 22a as R***E*T* I didn't recognise the one, until I came and read the forum and found Brendan's @27 where "animal cross" solved my ***E of 21d so that 22a, now with 4 crossers, leapt out at me! Thank you, Brendan, for that hint.
