Rogissimo, thanks - and you've given me the chance to add something which I overlooked and which I think is fairly important. Although the Guardian/ Everyman prize threads don't usually give answers, the people supplying hints and tips are very welcoming, friendly and, importantly, helpful. I think would-be solvers appreciate the encouragment!

Thanks, Rogissimo - I think I meant to browse through some of the recent threads. I hadn't looked at them for ages and just hoped they were still as good/helpful/friendly as they used to be. I'm glad you confirmed that!

I'd also wondered about that Malone, as I'd been using the forum just for the Everyman for a long time so was a bit nonplussed the first time I came on the Eye forum for a hint and found answers jumping out at me! I'm used to it now, but I still prefer hints to answers, as I like to try and work it out for myself. And I fully concur with what you said about the friendliness of the Everyman forum!

I'm finding this crossword more of a challenge than usual. Just got the bottom right to do now, so a hint (rather than the answer) for 21 down would be helpful please.

Beastly complaint from former prominent socialist, Balls. (7) F---R--

You need a four-letter 'former prominent socialist' and then a three-letter word for 'balls'as in nonsense, rubbish etc. You'll then have the beastly complaint, animal disease.

PS I think some people don't think to ask for 'hints only'. If people say 'help', I'd assume they'd be happy to get answers.

Great, thanks Malone. Being Private Eye I got stuck on thinking that balls must refer to Ed Balls and be either ed or oo.

I always make sure to ask for 'hints only'!!
