That's a really good clue. I can see why rogissimo considered it COD.

Well I've finally read through the thread and filled in a couple more answers. I just got three on my initial read through and fter looking at all of them abandoned the crossword to tie in a rose. Then I started to get a few. but was convinced 16 was sandwich! and was desperate to fill in wagon wheel for 23ac, which I still haven't got. Though I'm pleased to say I got 15ac. Well done me.

Has 21d got something to do with the heart?

I don't know what syrup is slang for.

Five left in sw corner

brendan - I’ve never knowingly had an upside down one either, but they stick in my mind from childhood viewings of Dad’s Army: Private Godfrey mentioned on a number of occasions that his sister Dolly made very good ones.
And geeker - I’m glad you endorse my rather snap COD choice: on further reflection I think it ties with your choice of 15, and possibly also with 23 (despite chrise’s quibble re the latter).
Enjoy the rest of your day!

Like Geeker I have 19d to finish. Any hints would be welcome. Can't parse 26a, so maybe that's wrong as well.

I’m afraid 21d has nothing to do with the heart as far as I can see. It parses as 1,5 (the 5 being something you have to bear), and the definition is in my view a bit loose, though no doubt justified by the dictionaries.

Hi Roof,

How are you feeling after your bout of Covid?

21d - parses as 1,5 - definition is "throughout"

19d is an insertion of 4 in 2. 4 is a type of 2 down. The solution is more commonly seen in crosswordland than in real life, in my experience at least.

Sorry - an insertion of 5 in 2. Gin and tonic has hit home.

Brendan, I haven't been following Olympic athletics. For the moment road cycling: men's today and women tomorrow. I followed MTB, but track cycling is too arcane for me, though it's a UK specialty.

In athletics I'll mostly pay attention to middle/long distance. I see GB has two stars in Kerr and Hodgkinson. I just noticed men 10K finished but wasn't aware of it. Grant Fisher interrupted the East African parade to get bronze! Yared Nuguse has some chances in middle distance.

Sha'Carri is a great athlete and I hope she does well, but I'm old (and old-fashioned) and have trouble getting behind the really brash/flamboyant competitors.

Now that you've brought it up, I have to study the schedule!
