Hi Tim,

30d - 3 letter "foolish one there" (US) + 3 letter "company in France" (minus extra letter) + "Spain" - definition is "budding leader in US" a term I'd never heard of.

36a - is a very regular crossword setter's ploy - not an anagram but as easy as that - remember, some clues are wordplay only.

Thanks, cracked it. I corrected a wrong letter in 40a. I was then able to get 30d.

Nice puzzle. A couple of clues where I want to iron out the parsing, but I'll look at those again tomorrow.

Thanks, Opsimath.

Another really nice example of the specialist crossword genre and I enjoyed it - but it was definitely on the easy end of the spectrum.
While I accept the argument that entry level puzzles are needed occasionally to encourage new solvers these should be the exception not the norm. We nave has quite a lot of easy puzzles recently.
It was a nice gentle puzzle but please can the editors increase the average level of difficulty. There are plenty of really difficult puzzles out there. The Listener needs maintain its reputation and provide a significant challenge most of the time.

I'm new to this - I do the Times crossword every day, spotted a few clues here that I could solve and got drawn in, managed to complete it with Chambers and Bradford to hand.

I've shaded the relevant cells but I can't quite see how the last two words of the instruction identify them? Maybe I've got the penultimate word of the instruction wrong?

jgj, look up in Chambers the answer you entered "in an unconventional way".

I agree jgj - the endgame doesn't quite work. Fairly obvious what is required though I think.

Thanks, I've got the final construction and very neat it is too, but I think the first letter of the penultimate word of the instruction is wrong?
