I agree rhsl that this was relatively straightforward, but 30d took up at least 20% of my solve time! Still pondering the relevance of the longest thematic, but the end game is really rather neat.

Hi Gitto,

Isn't the definition of the long thematic just a nod to the title of the work in question.

The longest thematic is also relevant to the endgame

Good point Brendan, I should probably have been more careful but guess it’s all straightforward enough so doubt it’s an issue in practice

I'm sure your reply was perfectly fine CD, I was being overly careful, that's all I meant:-)

I'm sure that many of us old uns are fans of the theme. I was hooked at the age of eleven by the particular item on which this puzzle is based - sixty one years ago!

For me, it was working out 15a that gave the most trouble…got there in the end!

30d is troubling me. I have the writer and thematic items. If I enter the answer I have for 30d, 36a does not fit! Chambers does not appear to help (me, at any rate!)

Timbh23, I'd never seen 30 D before, but it's in my Chambers (13th ed). 36 A seemed fairly straightforward...
