I will remember this being played incessantly on the record player (!) at the 1963 Young Socialists Summer School held at Ruskin, Oxford. I wonder what happened to all those other naive idealists? A nice puzzle which is most welcome for people of my level. All finished but cannot get anywhere near parsing 20 ac. I'd welcome a hint. Thanks

Hi Williamseal,

20a - "prime" refers to 'numbers', but remember there is an extra letter.

Jgj @30, the first letters of the last two words should be the same, if I remember aright.

Yes, that would give the correct instruction, but by my reckoning the wordplay extra letter gives a different first letter for the penultimate word. Maybe I've got the wrong answer there.

Hi Jgj,

are you sure you're using the "in" from the clue as a containment indicator?

Sorry, my mistake, I'd parsed 23d completely differently and ended up with a different middle letter and a word which according to Collins online dictionary vaguely means 'mess'!

Got the seven words, theme, and endgame. But totally stuck on 37d. Only missing the unchecked letter, which surely must be T or S, but neither makes sense to me!

The magic of posting! Got 37d as soon as I asked! No wonder I couldn’t make sense of S or T.

Hi

The only thing left for me to do is carry out the instruction. Without giving anything away how hard is it to do? In other words should I put much effort into it? If it’s one of those PDMs I’ll give it a miss, I’m not good at lateral thinking.
