Hi Simon,

26a - the wordplay is "ate nothing" 3,3 reversed/"back" minus the "husband"

Thanks, geeker. I'd mis-spelled my entry for 23d which led me to a different answer for 26a. All done now.

As often seems to be the case, I am struggling on completely different clues to most people! Any hints for 22a would be very welcome:
Ex-president's male horse going west in country

Hi Docrum,

22a - 1 letter "male" then 4 letter "horse" inside 2 letter "country" (both these last 2 are reversed/'going west' - definition is "ex-president"

Docrum the definition is an ex-president but not of the USA... But thinking about recent ones might lead you to a PDM!

Thanks Docrum,

I was worried my woeful attempt to clarify an already muddled explanation would just make you pull your hair out!

This was so tight. I would go as far as to say this was the best Saturday prize in the last five years that I can remember. Thanks Picaroon. This was a work of art.

Took me a while to get started with 14d as my FOI. And i got held up in the SW for ages. Still can't parse the country part of 22a. I'm going to go for my penultimate clue in 24d as my COD. But there were many.
