I don't seem to have understood the preamble? How can there be about 8 clues that say they have more letters than those available in the grid? Eg the last clue only has 6 spaces on the grid but it the clue says it has 9

The preamble also mentions 'clashes' - Inquisitor clashes often involve more than one letter...

Straight anagram - definition is "part of France"

Sorry Sloth, as you say, this is one of the geography clues so you didn't really need the definition part of my answer:-)
