That was tough! Particularly the SW, where I'd never heard of 13, 14, 18d or 25, and lacked the GK for 27

birder - yes correct. It might help to think of it as a 6-6 rather than a 12.

birder, your crossers are correct. The first of the 2 definitions is a kitchen implement.

rocky 7 - definition is cross (as a verb). Cryptic fodder is a full reversal of yard and had dinner. Hope that helps.

I got nothing on the first pass which is always a worry but then it turned out OK - just needed to work through it slowly. I'm left with 1a and 4d (for which I assume I just don't have the classical knowledge). Could I have a very gentle clue for either of those? I've an idea for 1a but can't see the first word. Thanks!
