Hi Buzzybee,

The IVR Google page gives both the single letter and 2 letter versions but Chambers gives it as a single letter, that's then followed by 4 letter "Queen" and usual "king" (and it all follows "small", of course)

Thanks Brendan. You are right that Chambers gives a 1 letter abbreviation, but it is not really the IVR. The rest of the word play is straightforward enough.

You're right, it is odd that Chambers gives the 1924 Paris convention code and not the current 2 letter one. - at least according to the Wiki IVR page.

Chambers gives the single letter qualified by “(IVR)”. A case of “Homer nods”? Can such things be? 😉

Thanks. No apology needed; I only noticed because I almost posted something very similar. And have definitely sinned in the past - using “pipe” in a post on the “Ceçi n’est pas une pipe’ Listener comes to mind!

And thanks to Eccles for an excellent Genius. “All real words” was quite an achievement, I thought. I had to reverse engineer 20a as both cultural references went embarrassingly over my head.

is it the Eccles who sets in the Independent, does anyone know? This was exceptionally clever ... wonder if his name comes from the town or the Goon Show character?
