Finally finished this. Was badly held up by getting the Y clue wrong. I do like Paul so persevered with this one. As always thanks for all the hints.

I for one am not liking this. Never a fan of Paul to begin with, and I fear there is too much UK-centric general knowledge required for this poor Yankee girl.

I'm sympathising, darla; paul is one of my least favourite setters too.

It's a Bank Holiday one, so I might keep looking at it, but, with more than half of the clues solved, I'm still not able to enter anything into the grid.

Thanks, chris. I actually just got two of the ones I was struggling with. Knew the second definition of F of course, but not the first (Chambers to the rescue,) and patgreg's hint about Split helped tremendously. I'm a tennis fan so I know the name, and could then reverse engineer the parsing because "Glasgow district" was causing me problems, and that queen did not occur to me.

Well three left including two of the long ones. I did eventually get the B and the G, but the P and the S have eluded me along with the T answer.

I did start to fill in the grid as soon as I could. Thank goodness I use a pencil on the paper and can rub things out. I think I've got everything in the right place, but fear I must have got some things wrong as I can't find answers to P, S and T with the crossers I have. Please can I have some hints for these. I may have to rub out the entire grid and start again.

The long B and the i 5 were the key to getting started for me. Because O (4) is obvious then.

Roof the long P is an anagram and quite a well known phrase for someone who is good and well meaning.

Yuk. I hate these types of crossword. I'm not going to even start. I'll just put it aside and wait for next week's cryptic.

I just finished, all in the grid in the right place. Well chuffed as several new to me words and or GK. COD has to be G.

Thanks Rocky for pointing out P is an anagram. I spent ages trying to work out the anagram as one word until I suddenly noticed I should be looking for three words and the penny dropped. Doh!

I've made up an answer for the T, but I can't parse it at all, though I might just have worked out the Turner.

I still can't make a word out for the S. I suspect the definition is a beastly poseur, but can't get the first word.

Like you Rocky, my way in to the grid was from the B and the I, which gave me the O and the R. It was quite a hard jigsaw to do, but in the end was logical. Filling in the jigsaw when I've got half the answers does help me find the others.

So far my FOI was I and my LOI will be S should I ever get it. Lots of words I didn't know and lots of parsing I didn't get. I'm too tired to have a favourite.

Gardening tomorrow - weather and back willing.

I agree with Nelliegee - an engrossing, though not easy, crossword. My foot in the door was pencilling in both the 5-letter words in each space. The reversal indicator for several clues also shows that they go across or down in the grid.
