Oh dear. I know I should read Shakespeare (and I want to!) but I don't know where to start. There is so much! Recommendations accepted!

The quotation is often given including "well", but it's incorrect.

Don't bother with Shakespeare - it's all "Emperor's new clothes".

I think trying to read Shakespeare (apart from the sonnets) is likely to put you off him for life. You need to see it if you can. I’d start with King Lear, perhaps. Very clear plot, viscerally exciting and ultimately very moving if done well.

No! As it happens, King Lear was the last play I saw, and I was so bored and frustrated that I walked out at the interval.]

I'm finding this tough. But in a good way. Feared a dnf at one point.

I have three left. I have possible answers but can't parse.

8a I've seen the hints here but can't think of the word for answer or the homophones

4d I have an answer but can only parse one bit and not sure I fully understand solecism.

25a can't find a word that fits any definition in the clue but I must be missing something.

I suspect most would know the quote even if they haven’t read the work. Though, you do need to know the profession of the deceased…

Hi Rocky7
8a the definition is ‘like strand,’ strand being in the sense of shore. The homophone is a rarely used
4d parses as 1,1,5 with ‘in’ indicating an insertion. Solecism is the definition.
25a is something a vandal might do to a work of art, and the letters are all exam grades.
Hope this helps!

Hi Rocky,

25a - check you've correctly spelled 13d (I didn't and it caused 25a to be my LOI)

4d - 2 single letter abbr. + 5 letter "below"

8a - definition is "strand" as in 'shore' but I didn't know the answer means it and also didn't know the homophone means "character flaw"!!
