Sorry, I omittd the clue is 14D.

One of many definition misdirects in the puzzle.
14 Parses as 4, 4, 1, 1
The second 4 is "German car"

The definition is racer. There is a German car in the parsing - first four letters of the second word.

I think the answer is what Cameron and Hague are, and the platform is what it sounds like? That’s the reason for ‘speaker’s’; the ‘say’ is because they’re examples of it.

Oh, and I think 5ac is a pretty tight clue but not sure about ‘environmental’; ‘greenwashing’ more like it.

I’m with you on this JustSolve , appreciate the witty and clever clues but it is hard work. Just back from a full on few days in Rotterdam is my excuse!

Came on to say this was about my perfect level of puzzle, thanks Picaroon. Got there without help or Google but I had to come back to it a couple of times so it kept me going into this morning.

Unlike others I thought 5a made perfect sense, could see what was needed from the start but my unscientific brain took a while to get the phrase. Might go and find that Bucaneer one now....

Long time lurker / beneficiary of advice and hints for Saturday Prize offerings, first time poster.

Made good inroads on first pass. FOI 12A. 8D made me chuckle and a contender for COD for me.

Completed this morning - and I'm pretty sure I have the correct answers for 20A and 25D, but could do with a hand parsing them?

Ha. The minute I posted I got them.

Nice misdirection on 20A. Despite being a car fan (and having owned one of the Volkswagens in question!), I got totally fixated on the Beetle.

Meant to add 28A was a new one for my GK.

5 across I found hard work but understanding the parsing made me laugh, it showed my age to, CCS ( Collective Consciousness Society) were a jazz hippy outfit who had one major hit. Thanks for the memory Picaroon!
