Thanks, ChrisE, that sounds good. I've got used to the Private Eye style and seldom spend any time wondering how all the bits work!

Duplicate Post by Neilm1

24 ac. "Agency accepts alternative date for veto"?
If it's "forbid": alternative = or, date is "bid (I suppose), but what's the F?
If FO (Foreign Office) it still doesn't make sense (to me).

Answer by Getting

OR alternative inside FBI + D for date

I don't do the puzzle, but it could be EYEWASH?

You will see from my original posting that was the one thing that did not need explaining.
Thanks Malone for clearing the fog about Ron and clue structure. Not one of Cyclops’ best.

Responding to myself - must get out more!
That post was in part intended to be a response to an earlier superfluous one explaining the bleeding obvious that "I" denotes Cyclops, our respected crossword compiler.
I can't get the hang of posting on this Forum: how do I contribute to an existing thread without replying to or reporting an earlier posting, or indeed how do I start a completely new thread? Any help much appreciated, JT

JohnT, thanks. I think you only need to start a completely new thread if there isn't already a recent one on whatever puzzle it is you wish to discuss. It used to get very confusing when there were three, four or five threads on a Times Cryptic, say, with lots of duplicated pleas for help, answers etc.

To contribute to an existing thread, you simply 'reply'. Many people add 'John, at post 19' and then go on to comment - that makes it easier to navigate through the thread (and avoids the slight messiness if three other replies have come in between-times!)

I took it simply as FBI accepting OR (=alternative) with D (=date) at the end
