the on gives you an o

Thanks! It works just as well without the o, using a different (4 letter) word.

But does it give you a valid answer to the clue without using the O?

I think so. Def = Mounted fighters , anagrind = b(a)tter (as a verb), fodder = roans jeered - dear. Am I missing something?

I think Candledave’s point is that the wordplay is intended to give the untreated answer, not the treated one, as the preamble says

Sorry to go on about it but I think you are both missing my point. The syntax of the clue seems to me to be identical with or without the o. In the actual case you first ‘batter’ [o roans jeered] and then treat by removing ‘adore’. In my alternative without the ‘on’, you batter [roans jeered] and then remove ‘dear’. If I have misunderstood this I’d be really grateful for a detailed parsing. Thanks.
