Sorry to go on about it but I think you are both missing my point. The syntax of the clue seems to me to be identical with or without the o. In the actual case you first ‘batter’ [o roans jeered] and then treat by removing ‘adore’. In my alternative without the ‘on’, you batter [roans jeered] and then remove ‘dear’. If I have misunderstood this I’d be really grateful for a detailed parsing. Thanks.
