Hi Harvey,
Everyman definitely has some favourite grids. Last week is a good example and he uses it, or variations close to it, regularly.

It has a big cross in the middle, two little crosses and two of what I call “teddies” (because they look like teddy bears? :-).
With this grid you can have a fair bet that the rhyming pairs will be in either of the symmetrically placed 11a and 20a, or 3d and 12d positions.

On the subject of grids, yesterday’s prize puzzle grid was also interesting and one that crops up fairly regularly. Unlike any other Guardian grid it has every solution length from 3 all the way to 10 and with 33 lights, one of the highest clue counts available.

I seem to have solved everything (thanks to several lookups I needed, e.g., for the songwriter) except for 19D, a clue that many seem to admire:

Both sides of the Atlantic flipping over party puzzle (6)

(I have the letters _ U _ O _ U, which I hope are correct.)

A hint will be much appreciated.

Hi Daz,

the answer is made up of the two x 2 letter abbreviations of the countries "both sides of the atlantic" reversed and they go around 2 letter "party" - definition is "puzzle" (it's a common numbers puzzle)

Though I would have preferred the clue to us "around" instead of "over":

Both sides of the Atlantic flipping around party puzzle

Hi jono, thanks for that explanation (and you have deciphered my username!) (Not tricky).

Just looked again at E 4030 and understand your teddies description.

I will up my game and look at grid type from now on.

Cheers
