I can't find a word anywhere that fits 5 down. And 24 down? 26 down? Once again a theme trumps straightforward cluing and reasonable GK.

5d take jaw as a verb. i don't see what "seriously in the face" does.
definition crosses as a noun

Started at 2.00pm and stymied by 2.30pm.

I've read all the clues, but only got 16d. I got 1d from the hint given here.

Is 9ac an anagram? Is 8d an English composer? I've not spotted the hidden or the anagram yet Brendan.

I'll have another go, but may give up.

The cat is demanding my attention!

I got 5, though it was nearly last one in. Had to run through my list of 3-letter terms for "jaw" (verb). Not *that* rare a word by crossword standards and I'd seen it but forgotten.

24 was iffy, I got most of the way by parsing but had to google the answer.

26d rather clever IMO, but being American and unfamiliar with the word I had to burn a lot of time.

Great grid structure, but borderline "fair" due to exotica. I enjoyed it after some initial aggravation.

i suppose "seriously in the face" is a verbose way of giving one letter

I can think of a 3 letter word for jaw but the resulting answer is nowhere to be found in any dictionary I've found. Where did anybody find it?

Hi Chris

Many thanks for your help. Now I see 9ac and I'd thought of 8d, but was being stupid.

My brain isn't working too well today. But my 19 year old cat is eating better since I discovered the 10 seconds in the microwave trick for his food. It seems to improve the 9ac.

I'll have another stint.
