13a is given in the dictionaries though Collins, having attempted to justify the usage, then states “…though many people object to this use”. The inverted commas in the clue are possibly intended as an acknowledgment of this fact.
I notice that as well as appearing in the grid each of the xxx are also referenced somewhere in the clues, including both names for the one which (informally and I’m sure incorrectly) has two names.
I completed the grid eventually but due to the amount of help required from here and from Google, and the number of clues I cannot fully parse, I would have to call this a DNF. Very difficult, beyond the limits of my GK. Well done to Kite for achieving the grid layout, but overall not my cup of tea. Many thanks to all who gave help here. Enjoy the rest of the weekend.
FYI, I looked up Kite’s last two puzzles and they both have strong themes, you probably recall them… 28,998 (other Guardian setters) and 29,223 (knots).
Thanks, jono. I recall [having been reminded ;-) ]those themed Kite puzzles.
Barely familiar setter to me. Looked in archives at https://www.theguardian.com/profile/kite
He was Genius only for a while (2 in 2020, 1 in 2021), started non-Genius in July 2022 but only 6 so far.
