Slowly inching to the end now Got the key contributor and the unaffected character, just got to find the two letters and move them.

Phew, all done. I was worried about a non-word until common sense struck me.

I believe I may have finished this puzzle, but I have been unable to parse two clues. The first is 13 across which, if the rest of my reasoning is correct, will provide the third letter of the first word in the second nineteen-letter set of words. The second is 25 down, which provides the penultimate letter of the third word in the first set of words.

Any hints welcome, or alternatively, please let me know if I am barking up the wrong tree.

25d - alternate letters, but the first word of clue is key here (and needs adjustment)

13a - 5 letter word for dean with last letter changed to ‘Latin’

25d - adjustment to fist word which applies to second word in the same way as a snake would do that to its skin

I reckon andyp’s parsing is the right one for 25d rather than mine

All done but I still can't see the wordplay for 17, 34 and 40 (the latter two I can sort of see but not completely). Any gentle nudges would be much appreciated. Thanks.
