Simon, I believe Everyman dropped in on the "Everyman 3972" thread and explained it. But I'm trying to search the forum and coming up blank on the thread.

I see he referred to George Smiley in that crossword which links in with 10a. Coincidence??

I think that Smiley reference is more likely coincidence, but there's a significant (subjective) probability it's not. ;-)

Everyman 3972 contained "A GOOD INNINGS", which was a nice flourish. 2 here vaguely ties in with cricket, though I'm probably imagining things. 3 is more plausibly connected with the "theme", but less colourful.

Couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw there had been 36 comments on the Everyman thread by 8 in the morning my time, normally there’s one or two, if any!
