Brendan, I think the clue parses OK as 1, 2, 1, 2, 4.
Though I question "through" rather than something like "on".

Hi Darla,

That's it, you've got it spot on - many thanks, it was driving me crazy:-)

Thanks Geeker, what can I say - obviously I'm a bit rusty this weekend:-)

Daz, like geeker I'm American, and you do pick up these little items as you go along. TT stands for time trial by the way. The rhyming slang still trips me up though, not to mention British geography.

I'm not entirely convinced that 'in' is equivalent to 'through'. I think it's more likely that the 'an' was left out by an editorial slip. Not that that ever happens in the Guardian!

I was intrigued by 'regularly' meaning every third letter in 8d. I knew that was allowed, but it seems to be rare. I sometimes wonder if Everyman has a policy of gradually stretching us until we're ready for all the obscure devices that the midweek setters use on a regular basis.

Hi Rainman,

Chambers does give one definition of "in" as 'by or through', so I think the clue is parsed just as Darla and Geeker have said and the mistake was mine.

All done but can't parse 25. Any enlightenment available?

TT is also Tourist Trophy as in Isle of Man.

Good day all, found this tricky but enjoyable. All the usuals. Note the variation on the 'regularly'. Favourites are 4d and 16a, 4d gets my COD.

Cannot parse 5d though got the answer, I'm sure it will come to me after a coffee and i hope before the NLD. COYS.

Sympathise with friends from across the water on some of our subtleties and local knowledge but we have to hang on to something here!

Lucertola - anagram of the first 5 letters is biblical.

Sorry, wrong explanation. Think of the author Lawrence. Two key initials are relocated.
