@Rocky, you can't really blame me - for us it's akin to seeing a Unicorn 😂

Hey, I don't blame you one bit. You take your pleasures where you find 'em.

HI everyone

No idea what Rocky and Brendan are talking about; I assume either football or chess.

Qaos is not on my wavelength. I have now read all the clues and have solved a smattering. I've got some answers from my first read through. Now I need to go back and think again.

10ac my husband tells me Mahler didn't write any overtures. Is he wrong?
I had to look up 7d.
I don't understand 18ac. I've two possible answers.
I can't remember any French mathematicians. I'm disappointed it isn't Coulomb, though he was a physicist.
I think I have the first 6 letters of 14d, but can't think think what the last four are.
I've no idea how to parse 31ac and don't understand 1d.
I haven't got the theme yet.

I'll be back

HI Roof,

An "overture" can refer to an 'opening' or 'beginning'.

18a - Double definition

14d - 7 letter "red's" minus single letter/'no midfield' + 3 letter "issue" around/'covering' 1 letter "international" - definition is (order for) "work".

31a - A famous "Diamond" (not an it) around "i" and reversed/kept back - definition is "stay longer in sack"

1d - 1 letter "2.7183" (you can Google it) + 2 letter "3.1416" + 1 letter "25" clue? - definition is "that's impressive"

Apologies Roof I snuck a quick football reference in under the radar.

I didn't know the French mathematician either but if you think of a word for messenger and the symbols for the types of temperature measures. Then google the other word it makes sense. If that makes sense. Probably not.
