Just one more question buddy. Did you start entering the first answer in the top left hand corner, or in the cell numbered 1?

top left. Since you know the entries end in the cell just below that (cell marked 3) I found it helpful (actually easier) to start entering the final clues up in that area as well.

Ok, so at least one person has solved it, which is good :-) Ihope others find it ‘worth persevering’ - I realise it’s not quite my usual fare but it was fun to set and I really enjoyed solving a similar one set in the 1980s by Hex, found in Gyles Brandreth’s crossword book.

I greatly enjoyed it. It’s always good to see a non-standard entry method, and I thought the clueing was extremely fair. I know some will moan about the preamble, but I don’t see that it could have described what to do any more clearly.

Does the "not more than 2" apply to the traffic light cells as well? I can't seem to avoid having 3 in the cell marked "4".

I think it applies to all. I visited it as the last letter of a / first of b and last letter of ag / first of ah

Just finished and very glad to get off the tour bus - rather a bumpy ride (driven by another one of those scientists, I believe).
If I see another one of these I'll get a taxi.

quisling - surely a and b meet in "1". The cell "4" can't be an odd number of letters after the top left cell. But reaching "1" requires passing through "4" for a to work. What am I missing?
