But the rest of the clue makes no sense to me.

Re 5d, surely the parsing is straightforward. Female only is Hen (as in Hen Night); take H away (“hard to leave”). Private Eye gives Tail ( see definition 21 of Tail as a noun in Chambers. Occasion (as in Cause to Happen) is the definition.

24d defn is unfashionable ...anagram of T with dead

29a defn is cut....rush is the grassy variety (4 letters) with D + 3 letter legislation inside
