Thanks Phil. The “a” in 8d gives the first three letters (as in, two-a-penny)

But if you use the Ray spelling, you get a five letter answer, if you're consistent.

My shortfalls today were 8d, 10a, 22d and 26a .
Looked up answers but can't parse 22d.
Thought 20a was very good as it stood .

Hello fellow crossworders. I'm not sure how I managed to do exactly what I was trying to avoid in 20 across (including half the answer in the clue itself) but we have now managed to push through the intended wording. Apologies to those who only have the paper version.

Loubyloo, it is now. The 20a clue has been updated online so the previous comments won't make much sense.
