Thanks Everyman 😃! Although I must admit to a touch of disappointment that there isn't a pink-clad representation of the Observer's esteeemed agony aunt setting crosswords on Second Life.

I think there ard too many "I"s in the fodder for 18ac. Unless my "I"s are deceiving me.

It works I think. American is a single letter, then comes some fodder, then add the single letter for democrat… three i’s in total

After "ironic?", I'm seeing 'Not II' making 4 "I"s in all.

Perhaps you have a bad print version, it reads “Not I!” (I + exclamation mark) in the app.

I notice that in the online grid the 4th "I" looks like a "!". But not in the paper.

I think the answer is that the "!" in my paper looks like an "I". (They look very similar here too).🤣

Although I have the answer, I can't for the life of me parse 9d (Film taking hour, for example, about a supermarket nearly breaking record 3,5,6).Probably being very dense but could someone please put me out of my misery?

9d - 1 letter "hour" + 2 letter "for example" + 2 letter "about" + "a" + first 4 letters/"nearly" of a 5 letter "supermarket" all inside/"breaking" 4 letter "record".
