buzzb - it's an interesting point

Chambers also has sitter-in meaning baby-sitter and phoner-in for someone calling in to a radio show and in neither case is the plural shown; however, I would have thought that in both cases the 's' must come in the middle for the plural

Hello all. I think I have it all completed bar the parsing of two clues. In round 1 the well connected sister eludes me and in round 2 turning the volume up several notches has me perplexed and I can find no bucket.
Any help out there?

Hello, mullingar - for your answer, take an 'i' from the sister (a Californian nun with a well named after her).
The two quiet letters in the middle of the bucket get louder.

Actually, it's another well, but the same name (ref Alice in Wonderland).

Re the plural issue, another example in Chambers for which no correct plural form is given is Sheriff Principal. Clearly, the ‘s’ should go on “Sheriff”. However, even in the trade, a misplaced ‘s’ has become grievously common. Being a grumpy old git this annoys me just as much as misplaced apostrophes do…..

To add yet more, merrier, fodder for the Buzzb-initiated feeding-frenzy, I had two examples in my family of an oughter-in-law.

(Oughter be, but ain't)

Guess how I referred to them, collectively...

(Now both newlies-wed.)

Still no idea what the deeper significance of the "whole" painted columns, including their unchecked extras, is - but it's in the post, so Blaaahh.

But I did perform Ee-aye, Ee-aye, Ee-aye-oh

All done!

Like others, read the preamble and was flummoxed, but actually all went in rather smoothly in the end. Quite different, liked it!

And in my book, the line going under the table is certainly straight. Any kinks are simply following the surface, without changing direction within it.

Thanks Arcadia

- re well-connected sister, I had very satisfactory parsing: - 'well' = spa = (taking the) W _ _ _ _ S > "...the most successful female double-act in the history of British music hall and variety"

- none of your "Californian nun" foreign muck!!
