Ah. I'd assumed it was two situated next to each other. There's another possibe candidate which could reverse as a muscle but can remain as an Egyptian symbol.

I have been led astray for hours on 'two extra letters to respect your bars', trying to think perhaps too far outside the box. I see at least two synonyms of 'bar' in the grid, traced in the shape of letter 1 which Chambers deems a third synonym, and simultaneously completing the grid with the unchecked letter 2. All of this can be done without the pen leaving the surface from the third line-tracing.

Could this one be another controversy to rival the hare?

The hare controversy arose because the grid entries couldn't accomodate the endgame, I certainly don't think that's the case here.

The wife's attempt to join five (6 letter) words is achieved by ignoring the grid bars - her words overrun or skip the bars between the original answers, and Arcadia complains 'You ignored the bars!'
In her next attempt she manages to get them to start and end within the original grid bars, but this time there are two barred-off letters between her three entries (''to respect your bars'').

I am just about to throw the towel in with this one. I have a full grid, but cannot get any further because I cannot solve the first clue, despite the hints earlier in this thread. A further nudge would be appreciated.

A 3 letter shortened male name (Irish) - the 'upright type ' is a common type font with L(earner) inside.

Many thanks DRXX. It was the "upright type" that was eluding me.

I'm glad Mrs Jif doesn't put her oar in like this. It has been very frustrating!
I solved all the ("remaining", surely?) original and the "traced by lines" clues and placed their entries in the grid, then traced the lines for the first two tranches of clues.
After that I hit a brick wall.
I can't see how to trace 'ONE straight line' through the 34 cells when there are 'two extra letters' punctuating the three entries. That must need THREE straight lines, surely?
Worst of all is painting/highlight two WHOLE columns to show THREE original words whilst also respecting bars.
I've left it very late to seek enlightenment. Hats off to those who seem to have grasped the right end of the stick/ruler!

Jif - the one straight line goes through 34 cells plus the two other cells

In the columns that are painted there are three clued words plus some extra letters

Thanks for your response, candledave.
However, both these 'lines' involve crossing bars - something that Arcadia seems to think out of order. Or was he worn down by the missus's meddling?
