I should have written 'words', as they're not answers to clues (and never were).

...and I should have written, 'highlighted answers' because they are clued.

I'm laughing too! What a garbled mess that was - hope it doesn't do more harm than good.

Not to me - I'm baffled - and I still don't see where the last letter for the 9 letter entry in the seventh row comes from.

OK I'll try again - that is one of the answers to a clue the wife has since deleted. All deleted clues will have had definitions for the words in the grid, but these are not the same definitions given in the 'Traced by lines' clues.

I have everything except the paintbrush/shading manoeuvre, I think... a bit more grid staring for me!

My heart sank when I first read the preamble. But sufficient of the clues in both categories fell readily enough to cold solving and the gridfill was quite smooth. A bit of headscratching and an approach to the line drawing and shading emerged. I’ll be interested to see whether the published solution looks anything like my version!

I think you’re saying that nine clues do not match final entries in the grid and, accordingly, can be deleted. But then I believe that there would be nine unclued entries in the final grid, correct? Isn’t the part about deleting the nine clues redundant (and confusing), in any event?

I also think you’re suggesting that “shading” does not mean “deleting” and, as a result, we still need clues for the three words in two columns, correct?

Cute puzzle, but definitely open to different interpretations.

That is correct, there are nine unclued entries in the grid and there are clues for the three words in the two columns.
