Can anyone offer a hint to 52d. I am clueless.

52d - The wordplay is funny rather than 2 letters for this and 3 for that etc. Definition is "female group" (US and well know (mind you, I thought that about the Addams Family!))

You're looking for a temperature "just above freezing" and what someone who is "well qualified" might have.

It's also thematic.
