Sorry, smellyharry, if there was a narrower link, I didn't spot it. Judging by the title, I would think not. There was a hint here earlier for 32 if you remain stuck.

smellyharry,
I agree it seems like there's 100s of possibilities but having worked out the theme (3, 8. 4 as mentioned earlier) and the topmost and lowermost items, the range is much smaller. Good old Google!
re 32d: 31 is normal so the item in cell 32 has six letters (because 32 is 8 letters and 3 of those are below cell 32 so 5+1=6). Of the 8 letters, Joey's parent is 4, energy is abbreviated to 1 and the vessel is 3, the definition being the last three words. Do you know what replaces the clashes yet?

Finally crawled over the line. Not my cup of tea partly due to the overunching (6, 17, 27 and 37), esp combined with some of them being thematic, but I accept all fair enough in the end.

The thematic category is actually tighter than it first seems when you find there are different kinds of objects involved. The thematic at cell 32 was my PDM, but also put me off track a bit at first because it so happens that that word can refer to more than one kind of thing. It helps to actually find the "description of the theme", and the placement of that and the first and last clashes are neat. I can't spot any logic to either the selection or the placement of the other thematic items, though, which is a little disappointing -- with so many unches and a challenging grid fill it would have been nice if discerning the theme had helped with finishing the puzzle beyond just checking that the final items found do indeed belong. I felt that detracted slightly from an otherwise quite nice puzzle.

I am scratching my head over the wordplay for 11a: if anyone could drop me a nudge I'd be most grateful.

11a - Def is first 2 words. Wordplay is a word for on land with a letter moved back.

Thank you drxx. I was completely and determinedly focussed on making the thematic element in the second square. It’s such an obvious clue when you aren’t trying to make it start with the wrong letter!
