Have everything now but simply can't parse 17a and 38a, both of which I presume are thematic

17a - Think knitting footwear
38a - last word is the definition

Both are thematic

4 letter horse and 2 letter to die around usual abbreviation for Knight. Gives an adjective describing a way of cooking meat that was named after this particular battle...

17a def is a poetic word for "wooden" (of a specific kind); common 2-letter abbreviation for "church" + 4-letter word for "repair".
