Was anyone else surprised by the letter that replaces the clashes? I expected one that would visually represent the thematic items. Is there some significance I have missed?

I too have a replacement letter which does not give an approximate representation of the thematic objects. My letter occurs two earlier in the alphabet. When the preamble states "One such item......", I presume it means the generic term rather than the name of an individual item, of which there are probably millions.

0pt0, I think that the the preamble is very clear and to be taken literally ...

None of my thematic items at each of the clashes produces an integer when divided by 26 but the two word theme does. The preamble is a bit ambiguous here - "adding its letter values..." does "its" refer to 'one such item' or the 'description of the theme'?
Like ukridge I am surprised at the letter produced.
No one else is but i am struggling with 16ac despite having 3 out of the four letters: "to the west"?

Raggedy, you've narrowed it down to 26 options then! You could check which letter gives you both an answer forwards and something else meaningful to the West.

Raggedy, a thought just occurred that you might not definitely have all three letters correct though. I'll shut up, because I don't do well trying to be abstruse!

Yes, there are two 'items' available which give two choices for the second letter.
