I'm looking at 26 down as well.
I get "is wrong", but what does Cyclops and his ilk mean?
I thought the answer would be sinew. Si (is wrong) but I can't for the life of me parse the bit about Cyclips & his ilk.
Also 8 down - "Place ball and chain (just the top) in behind (6)"

Maybe I'm just tired. I did get up at 3am.

"in" meaning insert first two letters into....
