And now we're on the same sheet (because I'm sure you've got the same) why must it clash?

drxx - guess I'm being very dumb but no PDM for me. I've tried figuring what the final message might be, or at least key words it might contain, but can't see how to generate those letters form the clues either. As ever I imagine it's all too obvious when you see it. For the moment it seems an unnecessarily opaque instruction in what was already a tough puzzle - sorry to sound grumpy!

Iona - you’re exactly where I was when the fog begin to clear. If those clashes aren’t allowed, what does that tell you about 9?

Cruncher - what have the clashes in the cells produced?

In my defence it is what I had already highlighted but it's nice to know why!

Candledave and drxx: I meant clue 8, not 9. For 10 my entry is 75% of the flower, which clashes with ES. I could force them to the left ... but that leaves the clash with 42N.

I've solved a few more and am now down to five unknown. By now something ought to have clicked, and some enjoyment ought to have been possible.

iona - sorry i was talking about 8 too!

If you push to the left as you say, doesn't that sort your issue with 42N?

Not that I can see. Cramming at the end of 8 still leaves clashes in both the preceding cells.

And if the ends can't be extended...?
