18A: Five word definition (technical); then wordplay is straightforward

The clashing cells are revealed as having their length and status in common but Google has nothing helpful to say about them as a group. Nor do I see any pattern with the 15 overruns (someone else said there were 16), any single letters to be used as as replacements, 'internal' letters or a theme.

At least I can console myself with having got this far but - again - it's really all a waste of time. Hats off to the many who have solved it all.

If you take the correct number of overruns you'll have a better chance of confirming what the group has in common - and a google search, worded accordingly, should see you through.

Before I waste one more minute of my time on this fiendish puzzle (which makes Sabre look like child's play) could someone tell me if the faulty clues are faulty for a thematic reason. For example, the wordplay to 19E does not lead to the answer (assuming my answer is right (it does fit my grid).

19E is not faulty, murky. It fits in the grid, subject to the preamble’s stipulation about last letters, and parses fine in my view.

I have slogged my way to the finishing post at last, the breakthrough coming with the internal letters.

But I have one last question. Try as I might, I could not find more than 15 overrunning letters. If I am correct in identifying the additional 'others', I should have two instances of the letter L - but the only one I can find is supplied by 19E. What am I missing?

The clue is a container, but it doesn't seem to work. It would work if the first word of the clue were shifted to position four - i.e. before 'US'.

Ionacarr, I suspect your answer to 30N does not have 8 letters. It's an adjectival form
