I made my last one in -25A - far too complicated. I thought it might be an anagram for a retired horse, four letters, with unhappy being the anagrind. No wonder I could make no sense of my solution!

Ianwil, 21d was my last to parse, and even now I’m not sure I have it right, but perhaps it is a reference to a board which isn’t chess?

Just come here to ask about 21D too! I was thinking it might be a reference to THIS board (grid), given that 8 is an anagram of the answer, but in that case we'd need 'over' to be the anagram indicator.

Phil, I think it’s another 15x15 board. I know some here are very familiar with it

Thanks Jono. Just realised the anagram isn't even at 8 anyway!

Jono -- I think you're right. Talk about a tenuous clue, though! And 'over' is still pretty problematic - surely 'on' would be better?

I think it means the sort of board I am using to type this - though I refer to it as a different word to the answer.

Failed on 13d and 17a which I looked up.
1a I get the first six letters but not the last four
23a I've never heard a short walk being what the seabird sounds like. I've gone for a stroll or a wander but not that.
I'm sure 21d should read "Lead actor that's over 6 on board" as the answer would be an anagram of 6a .
