I largely agree with Quisling, though it's nothing to do with optimal or sub-optimal representations. I was mystified by the messages from Smithsax. As far as I can see the letter count of 39 removes all ambiguity.

Murky on reflection I agree. In the cold light of day I can’t see a viable alternative

I’m not sure when it is permissible to ask for veiled hints, but I have been grid staring for ages and so far had no inspiration. I have a full grid, a full instruction, and presume the theme must be associated with this specific date, but have not been able to get any further with this. Maybe sleeping on this will help.

Diver, if you have a correctly filled grid and a full instruction, the last part of it really is not obscurely hidden. It’s only the first part which might require a little more thought. I would hesitate to assume it was connected to a particular date

I think your hint is too veiled! I’m still no further forward - it would be helpful to identify the person referred to in the last 4 letters of the instruction. I thought the title of the puzzle might refer to hallowe’en. Perhaps this is giving too much away!?

The usual Tuesday lament from the sandbank. I have a full grid and the misprints. However I cannot for the life of me parse 14 across - where is the misprint?
Worse still no amount of grid staring seems to work. Was a hint offered in post 10?
I have identified a line containing a fish and a related work title. Am I on the wrong track? If so any nudge later this week would be welcome. Off to Cardiff to see my nation humiliated on Saturday.

Williamseal, this is very rushed - I'm out, away from my laptop. The misprint in 14 A is at the end- leading to a fairly common crossword device, usage...

Yes of course: I was looking in entirely the wrong place. Thanks Malone.

Any help on my other questions would be welcomed from any source. Is my fish wrong?

Diver, forget about Halloween - both parts of the name appear in a fairly common area of the grid.
Williamseal - I can't see an obvious fish in my grid... but there are so, so many and various fish in sea.

Thanks to both quisling and drxx, all done now. Not someone I was familiar with, but thank goodness for Wikipedia.
