It parses as no + second tier with e inside for Everyman’s beginning.

The term for second tier would normally be hyphenated.

Speaking of second tier, I agree with some of the earlier comments about this not being one of the better Everyman efforts. Also did not like 3d. As for 8d, it certainly seems to be a poem, but in the wordplay are the first nine letters meant to be a single word. Too much liberty taken there. No real standouts for COD either, although I always like the device in 19d. I rate that the best of a weak lot.

Hi all. Bit late doing this. Agree not too hard and some weaker clues, but liked 19D.
Can’t work out 27A at all despite having two words that would fit.

Hi Barry,
It parses 1,4,1,1 where ‘times’ gives you two of the single letters and duck is the last single letter. Defn is ‘in addition’ - in a formal way.
