Loubyloo10 5d Joint would be meat for first word of answer and second word would be definition of to confine.

I thought there were one or two tough clues actually quite liked 1a and 13a.

I thought the answer to 5d meant to do something quicker and miss bits out rather than have anything to do with saving money.

Thanks to Everyman. Found it a bit tougher than usual. Perhaps a step down in quality, several clues seemed less than elegant.
FOI 4, LOI 13. COD 13 over 7 and 17.
Fewer clues than usual on the COD candidate list.

Not the best Everyman today IMHO. A bit short on 28a for me.

What is the definition in 3d. Apart from the anagram how does the clue have any relation at all to the answer?

And what are the bananas doing in 24a?

I agree about 5d. Also why two anagram indicators (terribly and wrong)?

BANANAS is a slang word for the first 4 letters of 24 backwards. I'm surprised to see this in gUARDIAN-RELATED PUZZLE.

Terribly is the anagram indicator. Wrong is cryptically suggesting that the result of the wordplay is the opposite of austere (I think)

Agreed with jono@17. Took a while to reach that conclusion, one of the less impressive clues IMO.

Harder than normal, took me about 1 hour this week.

Can't really parse 5D though.

I have now seen the parsing of 5D.

I think 3D is what X ("wrong") marks on something ;)
