7d works as an envelope, so the anagram of parts is “in” the Amazon character

Doh! Just got it. Clever misdirection.

Thanks jono, I didn’t get the parsing quite right for 7d.

I am sure I have the solutions to 4d and 21d but despite much head scratching can't parse either of them.
Any hints please?

Hi CD,

4d - 4 letter "mischievous" + 1 letter "English" + 1 letter "rector" and 1 letter "yen"

21d - 4 letter (Christmas) "carol" (also name for Xmas period in general) reversed/"heading north" gives a "Spanish city".

So I understood the Amazon character but was trying to fit the words "and rain" into the character which didn't work. I presume the D is short for density and it is just 'rain' and 'd' inside

That's what I've got Jazzgirl, and it's confirmed by Chambers.

I was never much use at physics but if I reach into the dim and distant past I think d was the symbol for density in calculations.

Why on earth did I not get 21d ! The mind plays strange tricks once it starts getting on the wrong track.

The first 4 letters of 4d is a new meaning of the word for me so I'll excuse myself for missing that one.
