Finally finished on account of not being able to get 18d because I had a different word for ring also beginning with h for 24a. Shows you should always attempt to parse solutions.

LOI as a result was 22a, a name I wasn't aware of.

FOI thanks to Brendan was 12a and that got me well on the way to getting 26.

COD on a very good puzzle I think was 17,19 though I liked 16d too.

The stand is named after the battle as are several other ***s at football grounds, particulary if before the stand was built the end was a mound or hill or ***. I think the name for the end was originally adopted because many soldiers from the club's city died in the battle.
The song from Carousel has never been known by the name of the battle. It was adopted by the *** and later became the club's anthem after local group G**** and the P********* took their version to number one in 1963.

griffin @41
I could add that if you are at all familiar with the theme, the answer should be obvious!

I also remember eagle that the song from carousel was sung by many clubs in the 1970s before it eventually became the song of the *** at that particular club.

17d) The definition is "local", which I can get OK. But I can't see how to parse it.
There is an English river in there.
