I have the solution, a US statesman. Also, the first part = "free".
Can't figure out the end bit.

After my usual late start, I think I'm doing quite well. I've done about half. But I am struggling to parse the first part of 4d and 26ac. I'm also struggling to parse 12ac.

I thought the answer to 25ac was going to be moist, but it doesn't fit and now begins with an s. Does it mean various and not damp?

It's v hot here in Exeter, so I cannot sit in the garden. I'm waiting until this evening to tackle the ironing.

Roof, yes on 25a, the definition is various.

4d is an anagram to start with. 26 is also a complex anagram.
25 yes various. S then "moist".

The first part of 4d is an anagram of two words in the clue. Another anagram in 26a, with the heading off couples first. I had some trouble with 12a, being American, but I've done enough British crosswords to have seen leg as in cricket a few times so it finally came to me.

Very hot in Teignmouth too Roof but we're braving it. But it means I can hardly see the screen so apologies for typos.

After a good start in the NW I've ground to a halt about a quarter in. Could anyone give me a hint on 4d. Is it an anagram?

Also I'm assuming definition of 13a is last word.
