Quiz, a seven-letter 'having an effect on' loses the usual 'heather'.

Usual synonym (well, one of the usual two) for Heather, struck from seven letter word given by words 3 - 6.

Gah! Thank you both. I can put this one to bed now. Should have realised ‘Heather’ is almost invariably one of two things.

Quick ‘hi’ to Awinger, if he swings by - worth a look at today’s Guardian Prize. You’ll only need to read the preamble to see what I mean.

Many thanks -

Hw7 - thanks for the tip. Just had a look, interesting idea. Brings back some happy memories working on that grid.

Thanks to the various other posters for their kind words about this puzzle.

Great puzzle and suitably accessible, whilst equally satisfying, for an Easter weekend. Many thanks Awinger.
Like others, 34a was the highlight for me.
Funnily enough, I happened to be listening to Mozart's 1a when I solved the clue!

Thanks Awinger
One of my better days starting with a walk on the Norfolk sandbank before the crowds from the Midlands arrived. A nice solve.
This puzzle brought back memories of promising to do my best in the Church Hall to one of the other characters. How much we owed those volunteers! (Still can't work out the title - how many letters were stripped?)
Best to all for the holiday

WS, stripped suggests the outer letters have been removed, so four letters altogether

Before I draw a line under this excellent puzzle, can I get some clarity on the wordplay for a few clues ...

1a - Masses demand to have spaces for Queen’s return (8)

I can see a 2 letter "queen" and the (printer's) "space" but can't meld them with the rest of the answer.

10d - Irish girl yields to brief beating amid disturbances (11)

There's no definition but can't see any of the wordplay!

14d - Make savoury, sealing goodness with unctuous, spiny fish (11, two words)

I can see a 6 letter "make savoury" going around a 2 letter "goodness" but can't see how the 2nd, 3rd and 4th letters of the second word come from "unctuous"
